About the theater
History
The National Theater in Gevgelija was built in 1953 and is one of the most significant cultural and architectural landmarks of the city. After the earthquake in 1990 and the fire in 1996, the theater was out of use. After the fire, the structure and roof of the building were renovated, but its interior and facade remained in a dilapidated state.
In November 2010, a complete renovation of the theater was announced. The project cost 650 thousand euros, 500 thousand from the European Commission and 150 thousand from the Municipality. On December 17, 2011, the theater was put into operation with the play “The Marriage of Figaro”.
